Da quanto ha segnato 50 punti nella sfida contro il Geas è la giocatrice sulla bocca di tutti. Ma Samantha Prahalis è davvero molto di più di quella performance pur straordinaria. È per prima cosa un talento puro, naturale, capace di giocate che non si vedono molto spesso su un campo da basket. Ha confermato questa classe diventando una stella assoluta a livello collegiale, in uno dei programmi più prestigiosi come quello di Ohio State, e lo sta facendo anche in questo inizio di campionato a Cagliari, dove sta mettendo insieme numeri clamorosi, non solo i 24 punti di media, ma anche la valutazione di 20 a partita e, dato che spesso sfugge ma è notevolissimo, il 97% ai tiri liberi, dei quali gli ultimi 28 messi a segno consecutivamente, una cifra che fa impressione, ma che è poco più della metà di 47, ossia il record che la stessa Prahalis ha stabilito a livello collegiale. Ma Samantha è anche una ragazza che nonostante il successo è rimasta molto legata alla sua famiglia e alle sue origini. Andiamo a conoscerla meglio con questa intervista che ci ha concesso.
Nonostante tutte le difficoltà, Cagliari sta attraversando un momento magico, con tre vittorie di fila. Qual è il segreto?
Penso che abbiamo iniziato a trovarci bene l’una con l’altra sul campo. Giochiamo molto duro. il coach prepara buoni piani di gioco e noi semplicemente proviamo ad eseguirli.
Stai giocando una stagione incredibile, con cifre straordinarie. Pensi che sia il miglior momento della tua carriera?
Penso di giocare abbastanza bene in questo momento, non necessariamente al miglior livello della mia carriera. Semplicemente sto provando a giocare libera e a lavorare durante la settimana per preparare ogni partita.
Non può mancare una domanda sulla partita da 50 punti. Quando ti sei resa conto di aver scritto la storia? E come ti sei sentita alla fine della partita?
Ho controllato e visto che avevo un sacco di punti a un certo momento, ma non sapevo fossero 50. Il mio unico pensiero in quel momento era quello di vincere la partita. Se avessi segnato 50 punti e alla fine avessimo perso, non sarei certo stata felice. Quindi la cosa più importante era vincere. Alla fine è stato un bel momento.
A inizio stagione non erano in molti a credere in Cagliari, invece state facendo ricredere tutti gli scettici. Questo è un ulteriore stimolo a migliorare?
Non credo che abbia molta importanza quello che la gente dice da fuori, noi pensiamo solo a migliorare gara dopo gara. Arrivo a ogni partita pensando che abbiamo una possibilità di vincere e quindi mi aspetto di portare a casa i due punti. Detto questo, so che dobbiamo continuare a progredire giorno dopo giorno. L’aspetto più importante è lavorare duro nel preparare la partita e dopo provare a eseguire, a giocare con naturalezza e assieme durante il match.
Come sta andando la tua esperienza a Cagliari? E come ti trovi a vivere in Italia?
La gente è stata molto carina, accogliente e disponibile fin dal primo momento. Le mie compagne, lo staff sono ugualmente ottime persone. Mi manca ancora molto la mia famiglia, ma la città è molto bella, con un sacco di storia.
Cosa pensi del campionato italiano. Te lo aspettavi così o sei rimasta sorpresa da qualche situazione?
Il campionato italiano è di alto livello, con molte giocatrici di talento. Non sapevo cosa aspettarmi perché non avevo mai affrontato una formazione italiana quando giocavo in Eurocup con le mie squadre precedenti. Finora è andato tutto bene.
Il tuo arrivo a Cagliari questa estate è stato abbastanza una sorpresa, non c’erano stati rumors in precedenza. Perché hai scelto di venire a giocare in Italia e a Cagliari in particolare?
Ero interessata a giocare nel campionato italiano, così quando è nata questa opportunità del Cus, sono stata riconoscente e l’ho accettata subito.
Quali sono gli obiettivi della squadra per il resto della stagione? E i tuoi personali?
L’obiettivo della squadra è continuare a migliorare e ovviamente vincere. Sappiamo di essere poche di numero, ma stiamo diventando molto unite come nucleo. Personalmente, voglio continuare a lavorare e progredire ogni settimana.
Hai dichiarato di essere stata da sempre molto appassionata di basket, fin da piccola il tuo sogno era diventare una giocatrice di basket e anche quando finirai la carriera la tua speranza è rimanere comunque nell’ambiente. Da cosa nasce questa tua grande passione?
Sì, ho giocato a basket fin da molto piccola. Mi sono innamorata di questo gioco perché era divertente ed emozionante. La mia famiglia è sempre stata molto atletica e coinvolta nello sport, mio padre e mio fratello hanno praticato molte discipline.
La tua carriera collegiale a Ohio State è stata straordinaria. Eri un vero idolo, YouTube ancora è pieno dei video con le tue giocate spettacolari. Quali sono i tuoi ricordi più belli di quell’esperienza?
Ohio State è stato un periodo speciale della mia vita. Sono stata fortunata e sono riconoscente per aver avuto l’opportunità di giocare per un coach da hall of fame (Jim Foster – n.d.r.), alcune grandi giocatrici e tifosi fantastici. Penso che tutta l’esperienza sia stata grandiosa, non ci sono eventi in particolare che mi sento di citare perché è stata una grande avventura nel suo complesso.
Uscita dal college sei stata scelta al numero 6 del draft da Phoenix, ma dopo una prima annata buona, le cose non hanno funzionato come il tuo talento avrebbe meritato. Speri di tornare a giocarci dopo una stagione come questa con Cagliari?
Voglio giocare in WNBA perché voglio giocare di fronte alla mia famiglia. Voglio dimostrare che valgo quel campionato e che posso starci con profitto. Sono affamata di successo in WNBA e tutto quello che mi serve è avere di nuovo una buona opportunità per dimostrarlo. Spero che questo possa avvenire se gioco bene a Cagliari.
Prima dell’Italia, hai giocato in Israele, Romania, Russia e Turchia. In quale paese ti sei trovata e quale campionato ti è piaciuto di più? Hai trovato differenze con il campionato italiano?
Penso che ogni luogo sia stata una esperienza diversa, con aspetti positivi e negativi. Nel complesso non sono sicura quindi di quale posto mi sia veramente piaciuto. Il campionato italiano tecnicamente è simile agli altri in cui ho giocato con buone giocatrici, però lo stile di vita in Italia è migliore degli altri posti in cui sono stata.
E tra il basket europeo e quello statunitense, quali sono secondo te le maggiori differenze? E quale dei due preferisci?
Penso che ci sia una grande differenza tra il basket europeo e quello degli Stati Uniti, anche se è difficile da spiegare. In Europa a volte è un po’, come dire, imprevedibile. Sebbene ovunque giochi, io provo semplicemente a essere me stessa, mi piace il ritmo veloce e i tanti attacchi al canestro partendo dal palleggio che ci sono in Europa. Tuttavia preferisco gli Stati Uniti perché là posso giocare vicino alla mia famiglia.
Ti piacciono altri sport oltre al basket? E fuori dal campo come trascorri il tuo tempo?
Mi piace seguire tutti i tipi di sport, in particolare guardare l’NBA e il football americano. Mi piace uscire a fare shopping e andare al cinema, ma soprattutto amo passare del tempo con la mia famiglia. Questa è la cosa più importante per me: la Famiglia.

Since she scored 50 points during the game against Geas, everyone is talking about her. But Samantha Prahalis is so much more than that performance, although extraordinary: she’s a great, pure and natural talent, she can do such amazing things that very few other players are able to. She confirmed her talent becoming an absolute star during her college career, in one of most prestigious program like Ohio State. And she’s repeating those performances this season with Cus Cagliari, where she’s scoring fabulous numbers. 24 average points per game, an average efficiency of 20 but also an outstanding 97% in free throw percentage, with a consecutive streak (still running) of 28. An impressive number, but that is a little more than the half of 47, i.e. the record streak the same Prahalis settled at college. But Samantha is not only a great player, she’s also a girl very tied to her family, the most important thing in her life. So, let’s get to know her better by this interview that she kindly granted us.
Although all the difficulties, Cagliari is living a magic moment, three wins in a row. What is the secret of the team?
I think we are starting to get comfortable with each other on the court. We play very hard and coach comes up with a good game plan and we just try to execute it.
You are playing an unbelievable season, with outstanding stats. Do you think you are playing the best of your career? I think personally I’m playing pretty good, not necessarily the best of my career. I’m just trying to play free and workout during the week to prepare for each game.
We can’t avoid a question about the 50-points game. When did you realize you were making history? And which were your feelings at the end of the match?
I looked up and saw I had a lot of points at one point but I didn’t know I had 50. I was really just wanting to win the game. If I had 50 points and we lost it wouldn’t of felt good, so that was the main thing winning. It was a cool moment.
At the beginning of the year, very few people believed in Cagliari, but you disproved all the skeptics. Is this another strong stimulus to improve?
I don’t think it matters too much what outside people say, we just want to improve each game. I walk into each game thinking we have a chance to win and expect to win. With that being said we know we have to continue to improve each week. The main thing is to work hard in preparation for the game and then try to execute , play free and together during the game.
What about your experience in Cagliari, the team, the society, the town? Do you like living in Italy?
The people have been very nice, welcoming and helpful in Cagliari. My teammates and coaching staff as well very good people. I still miss my family a lot but the city is very pretty with a lot of history to it.
What do you think about Italian league? Did you expect something similar when you signed with Cagliari or are you surprised by some aspect?
The Italian league is strong, many talented players in it. I didn’t know what to expect because I never played an Italian team when I was in Eurocup on previous teams. So far it’s been good.
Your signing with Cagliari this summer was quite a surprise, because none was speaking about it. Why did you decide to come to play to Italy and to choose Cagliari?
I was interested in the Italian league so when I had this opportunity to play in Cus, I was grateful and took it.
Which are the goals for the team for the rest of the season? And your personal ones?
The goals for the team is just to keep improving and obviously winning. We know we are small in numbers but we are becoming close as a unit. My personal goals is to just keep working hard and improving aswell each week.
Since you were very young you have been passionate about basketball, dreaming to become a professional player, and I’ve read you also plan to stay involved in the game at the end of your career. Why and when did you discover this great passion?
Yes I’ve been playing since very young, I fell in love with the game because it was fun and exciting. My family has always been an athletic family around sports with my dad and brother playing alot of sports.
You did an extraordinary college career at Ohio State, become a true idol of the fans, we can find a lot of videos about your exploits on YouTube. Which are your best memories of this adventure?
Ohio state was definitely a special time in my life for me, I was fortunate and grateful for an opportunity to play for a hall of fame coach, some great players and awesome fans. I think the overall experience was great not one in particular event I can say because it was a great ride overall.
After being selected at n.6 pick and a good first season in Phoenix, things didn’t worked as well as your talent deserved in the WNBA. Do you hope to come back there after a season like this one in Cagliari?
I want to play in the Wnba because I want to play in front of my family again. I want to prove I belong and can be successful there like I was. I’m hungry for success in the Wnba and all I need is a fair opportunity again to prove that. I’m hopeful this will happen if I play well in Cagliari.
Before Italy you played in Israel, Romania, Russia and Turkey. In which country did you feel better and which of these leagues did you enjoy the most? Do you find any difference with Italian league?
I think each place was a different experience, with positives and negatives. I’m not sure overall though Which place I really liked. The Italian league is similar on the court with good players than the other leagues, living wise Italy is better than the previous places I have been.
And what about differences between European and U.S. basketball? Which of the two styles do you prefer?
I think there is a big difference between Europe and USA basketball, it’s hard to explain. In Europe at times its a little unpredictable. Although anywhere i play i just try to be myself. I like that it’s fast pace and alot of attacking the basket off the dribble in Europe. I prefer the USA though because I get to play in front of my family.
And what about Samantha away from the court? Do you like any sport other than basketball? Do you have some hobby or some particular interest?
I like watching all types of sports, I love watching nba, and American football especially. I like to shop, go to the movies and most of all I love being with my family. That is the most important thing to me-Family.
